Churchill Now

This is what our humble school looks like now. I wonder if the cafeteria food has changed.

A Saturday BBQ at the school is planned, with lots of fun rides and play things for the kids.

Will adult beverages be served?

Who do you keep in touch with?

Since launching this blog just a couple of days ago, I've heard from about a dozen old (and I mean old) Chargers who have collectively kept in touch with probably half the class.

For example...
  • Diana Ebert works at USAA with Melinda Guerra (now Reeves), Sandy Huerta, Ginger Callen and Melanie Felder.
  • Doris Jaeger (now Gold) and a band of Churchill chicks (Helen Lopez, Rose Herrera, Carol Robinson, Diana Ebert, Karen Brumley and others) get together monthly in San Antonio and they "laugh ourselves half sick."
  • Mike Martin sees Don Crook, Steve Oines, Dan Pollard, Mitch Huffman and Doug Pashoian at least once or twice a year. He played on a volleyball team with Susan Carter a couple of years ago. He saw Dwayne Baker recently for the first time in 20-something year and says, "He hasn’t changed one bit. That is one handsome boy."
  • Cliff Simpson is heading to New York next week and plans to have dinner with Jim Benedict.

In the "Comments" section below, let us know who you're hanging out with, and who you'd like to track down.

Yearbook quotables

Senior Year Yearbook Quotables and Memories

Some of the below do not do justice without a photo, but here goes:
"Mr. Perry prepares for a day of teaching (blunder) physics."
"Mrs. Liz Swayze reads a story (The Velveteen Rabbit) to her government class."
(Rumor has it Mrs. Swayze may show up at the reunion sometime...)

"Colonel Fred Oldinsky and his wife tear up the dance floor at the Jr/Sr. Prom."

Senior Art Students painted a mural on the "Senior Dining Room." (Is that still there???
You'll have to come to the Saturday gig at the school to find out...)
Bill Kaiser showed up at Buckingham Ball in tennis shoes and armed with a cane. (What???)
M*A*S*H'S final days were celebrated on February 28, 1987 by dressing up in character and coming to school in costume.
Questions we asked our teachers:
"When is it due?" "Does this get a grade?" "Can I write on the back?" "How long does it have to be?" "Do I have to get a tardy slip?" "Do I have to volunteer?"
Questions we hoped our teachers would not ask us:
"Will you read your paper aloud?" "Where is your homework?" "Would you see me after class?" "When can your parent see me about this?" "Is everyone ready for a pop quiz?" "Will you read your note to the class?" "Would YOU like to explain the lesson?"
(Any of the above coming back to haunt you as a parent and/or teacher???)

We had 6 students graduate with a 99 plus average: Ian Dick, Jan Ju Lan, Kirsten Robinson, Brenda Tyler, Sherri Whitehurst and Stephanie Wissinger....any of you out there????

TEEN'S LIFE WOULD BE DULL MINUS NEW TECHNOLOGY
"How would teenagers live without M-TV, Pioneer Stereos, cars, electric curlers, microwaves, electric guitars, pocket calculators, video games, access to computers, electric typewriters, one-step cameras, blow-dryers, walkmans, and electric pencil sharpeners?"

"Kaepa-the shoe with two laces"
"Spanish students depart for Mexico; culture awareness objective of trip"
"Spring break nearing; coast-bound again?"
"Best WC swimming season boys second, girls fourth"
"Commended Merit Students"
"ROTC ball"
"Chargers roar past opposition Matadors, Owls, Brahmas, fall"
"Junior Achievement"
"Exellence acheived at speech workshop"
"Churchill tops again; chosen exemplary school"

Many thanks to the former Chancellor staff for providing these memories...Hopefully I'll have some more time to add to this--and hopefully it gets you reminiscing--enough to get you to post a comment and get to the reunion!!! RSVP TODAY!!!

Don Harris Today

The gift of gab has served Don well. He's been a sports broadcaster for San Antonio's Channel 4 for 17 years, and has two Emmy nominations under his belt.

Dan Pollard Today

And we thought this guy was just a jock. After majoring in econ at A&M, he got his MBA there, and now "solves a broad range of real estate problems." Dan lives in San Antonio.

Cliff Simpson Today

Wow, big surprise. Mr. Debate Hero is an attorney practicing in Texas. Churchill prepared him well. We hear it was a tough choice for him choosing between a football or legal career.

John Scannapieco Today

John Scannapieco was that soccer-playing, Republican-loving Bostonian with a cool lake house and ski boat. Now he's a big-shot lawyer in Nashville and actually does some pro bono work for the little guys. Has he gone Democrat on us?

1983

Gotta love those bangs.

Sean Page Today

It must be something in the Churchill Salisbury steak. Here's yet another attorney, Sean Page -- football star turned litigator. He practices in San Antonio.
