Yearbook quotables

Senior Year Yearbook Quotables and Memories

Some of the below do not do justice without a photo, but here goes:
"Mr. Perry prepares for a day of teaching (blunder) physics."
"Mrs. Liz Swayze reads a story (The Velveteen Rabbit) to her government class."
(Rumor has it Mrs. Swayze may show up at the reunion sometime...)

"Colonel Fred Oldinsky and his wife tear up the dance floor at the Jr/Sr. Prom."

Senior Art Students painted a mural on the "Senior Dining Room." (Is that still there???
You'll have to come to the Saturday gig at the school to find out...)
Bill Kaiser showed up at Buckingham Ball in tennis shoes and armed with a cane. (What???)
M*A*S*H'S final days were celebrated on February 28, 1987 by dressing up in character and coming to school in costume.
Questions we asked our teachers:
"When is it due?" "Does this get a grade?" "Can I write on the back?" "How long does it have to be?" "Do I have to get a tardy slip?" "Do I have to volunteer?"
Questions we hoped our teachers would not ask us:
"Will you read your paper aloud?" "Where is your homework?" "Would you see me after class?" "When can your parent see me about this?" "Is everyone ready for a pop quiz?" "Will you read your note to the class?" "Would YOU like to explain the lesson?"
(Any of the above coming back to haunt you as a parent and/or teacher???)

We had 6 students graduate with a 99 plus average: Ian Dick, Jan Ju Lan, Kirsten Robinson, Brenda Tyler, Sherri Whitehurst and Stephanie Wissinger....any of you out there????

TEEN'S LIFE WOULD BE DULL MINUS NEW TECHNOLOGY
"How would teenagers live without M-TV, Pioneer Stereos, cars, electric curlers, microwaves, electric guitars, pocket calculators, video games, access to computers, electric typewriters, one-step cameras, blow-dryers, walkmans, and electric pencil sharpeners?"

"Kaepa-the shoe with two laces"
"Spanish students depart for Mexico; culture awareness objective of trip"
"Spring break nearing; coast-bound again?"
"Best WC swimming season boys second, girls fourth"
"Commended Merit Students"
"ROTC ball"
"Chargers roar past opposition Matadors, Owls, Brahmas, fall"
"Junior Achievement"
"Exellence acheived at speech workshop"
"Churchill tops again; chosen exemplary school"

Many thanks to the former Chancellor staff for providing these memories...Hopefully I'll have some more time to add to this--and hopefully it gets you reminiscing--enough to get you to post a comment and get to the reunion!!! RSVP TODAY!!!

Hello Class of '83! After seeing my name on the blog, I had to respond. Yes, Julie, I'm out here....actually living in San Antonio again. After getting my microbiology degree at A&M, I went to Stanford for my Ph.D. Currently, I am in Research & Development for a company here in SA. I have been married almost 20 years (this August) to Rhett Rushing, and we have 2 sons, Zane and Wyatt. That's the quick update on me! Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion in June!

Hi y'all -- I don't get to say that very often as I've been living in New England since graduation. I'm currently living in Wayland, MA (about 20 miles west of Boston) with my husband John and our two children, Robin (11) and Sam (8). I work for a small consultancy doing research and design for web sites and web applications.

Many years after graduating from Brown with a degree in Cognitive Science, I went back to school for a Master's in Human Factors in 2003-2004. Another interesting adventure for me was spending a year living and working in Oxford, England in 2001-2002.

I get back to Texas every once in a while to visit my mom and sister, and I usually catch up with Sam Esquivel, David Cocke, Jian (Lan) Short, and a few other Churchillians (is that what we're called?).

Hi Kirsten! Glad to hear from you! Are you coming to the reunion? I'll actually be in Boston the first week of June for the American Society for Microbiology meeting. Perhaps we can get together? It would be great to see you!

I'm living in Houston just a half mile from where I went to school, Rice University. I graduated with a degree in geology and environmental science. After graduation I worked at Accenture for a few years, was the IT director for a major LPG company, did consulting work and have been "retired" for quite a few years now. I've been married (Mike) for almost 15 years and have two kids, Emily (11) and Christopher (8). Look forward to catching up in June.

Hey, Kirsten!

I live in Minnesota but our biz is HQd in Framingham. We were based in Wayland for about 8 years before that.

For those of you who aren't in the Boston know, Wayland is SWANKY. Kirsten musta done good.

By the way, I spent my junior year of college in Cambridge, so we probably have some stories to share.

I hope you can rally all the other nerdy folks to the reunion in June. I don't want to be the only one.

Brenda, Kirsten, Jian, Sam, Julie, and anyone else,
Hey, I would love to make it down for the reunion, but can't figure out how. My husband and I have four teenagers in high school between us: Sean (17), Meghan (16), and Anna and Erin (15); no, they are not twins and two have conflicting activities that weekend. After I fell off the planet as an exchange student, I never quite kept up all the connections. I graduated Cornell for undergrad and then to UT Dallas for med school, followed by 7 years of residency/ fellowships. I now work as a medical examiner in DC, which keeps me very, very busy. We live in Maryland outside of DC. (It's really NOT like CSI.) Jian, I wish I knew where you lived as we were down at Rice over spring break for the college tour thing. I often get to San Antonio, so will try to catch up with you Brenda.
What about Catherine? I still keep up with Colleen (Streckfus) White and Jill (Litzinger) Grimes

Julie, Julie, Julie...

It would be pretty hard to defend myself against the nerd label, but Wayland is swanky? Are you sure you didn't accidentally cross into Weston or Wellesley? Seriously, the swankiest thing I've seen here is the produce department at Whole Foods. The hottest shopping spot is Russell's Garden Center and we have maybe one good restaurant. The social event of the season is the elementary school PTO auction. We do have really attractive cows though -- they look like Oreos.

But seriously, do let me know if you will be visiting your HQ in Framingham -- they actually have some decent restaurants there; maybe we could grab a bite.

Sarah, I hope you can find a way to make it to reunion. I'm sure the kids won't get in any trouble. Maybe you could leave them with my dad in Arlington, VA. If not, maybe we could get together in the DC area -- we visit there pretty often.

See you all soon!

Hello again,
Well, Kirsten, I'm in the same boat with you. Haven't seen anything swanky in a long time. I'm lucky to get a dinner out that isn't chili dogs and cherry limeade at Sonic! As the mother of 2 boys, ages 14 and 9, I spend my "spare" time running from baseball games to swim meets to karate to theater productions (Zane's into drama, in more ways than one.) Did I have a life before kids? I think I did........hard to remember sometimes.....

Sarah, please try to make it! I'm glad to hear that Jian is coming. I contacted Stephanie Wissinger Carinci, but I don't know if she is coming. Oh, I've been trying to track down Colleen Streckfus. Can you send me her email? I'm also trying to get Jill and Catherine to come.

Any other BQs and nerds we can contact?

I keep thinking of clever little things to say in this section, but I'm afraid to post them because I didn't have a 99+ GPA. That is a requirement in this section of the blog, right?

Julie Jacobson said...

Kirsten, if I recall there's a nice little Dunkin Donuts on Boston Post Rd.

Julie:

Please check the GPA filter software. There seems to have been a protocol breach 5/28 at 08:38. Thanks.

Julie Jacobson said...

Thanks ccs. The breach is apparent. Unfortunately, the gpa filter costs extra on this blog. We must rely on the integrity of our average peers, and the vigilance of our 99-plusers.

Kirsten said...

Hmm, the GPA filter must be back in effect, because no new posts are getting through.

I, for one, would be interested in hearing Mike's "clever little comments" if we can lower our standards briefly...

I had dinner with Brenda in Boston on Monday - she was in town for a microbiology conference. We had a great time reminiscing (somebody better correct my spelling on that one) about our secret crushes and so forth.

Sarah, Brenda said you would be able to make it to reunion after all? It will be great to see you.

I pulled out my yearbooks and memory box and found some great stuff, like a calendar page dated May 19, 1979 autographed by Mr. Caraway from 8th grade algebra. Anybody remember the voodoo dolls we had of him and Mr. Stampley? Remember substitute teacher Mr. Landry and his horror stories?

Sarah Colvin said...

No need to correct. Your spelling is impeccable. How could anyone ever forget the Captain with his "oral" exercises... Jeff Kovacs in the back of the room going "douche".. what was up with that?!
Kirsten, you were the queen of voodoo dolls, if I recall even down to the detail of the tweed jacket!
I will be making it, coming in late Friday night, but will be there for Saturday. It will be great to see you all!!
There is way too much I don't remember though, scary as that is.

Mike, do write, the 99+ folks just LOVE clever comments, it's like candy for babies....

Hi--It's Brenda here. Kirsten and I did have a blast at dinner. We finally got our swanky night out!! We also have a photo, but I'll have to email it to Julie to post.
Oh, I'd also like Mike to post his clever comments, but we reserve the right to grade the content, grammar and spelling. It's a 99+ thing, you know.

Greetings to all you ghosts in the closet (or whatever the appropriate metaphor may be):

Kirsten phoned me up out of the Blue today and put me on to this blog and what you guys have been up to. After satisfying myself that she was not part of the Reunion Committee and therefore a) not trying to get me to pledge money, and b) not trying to get me to volunteer for something, I had a pretty good old chin-wag with her that revilatized a lot of ancient memories (suitably filtered, of course, by twenty-five years of additional experience).

Alas, as I explained to Kirsten, I am in a heavy legal discovery period and would not, even had I been planning to, be able to make reunion. However, FWIW (as the coo-el bloggers would say), I give you a few edited highlights of my life to date:

- I have been married to my I-can't-believe-she-was-fool-enough-to-do-it wife Jaimie for fifteeen years this month.

- We have three extremely strong-minded daughters: Katherine (10), the grouch; Caroline (8), the sweetheart; and Elizabeth (6) the bucccineer.

- I graduated from Washington & Lee Law in 1991. After many years of practice in the field of telecom, in 2004 I joined the Employment Litigation Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice as a trial attorney and have been having a ball ever since.

- I realized quite some time ago that (speaking as a college English major) although it was great to express oneself as a writer, there really isn't much of a market for such bloviations. Thus, thank God for the internet: Several of my friends and I have formed a moderately successful blog: www.llamabutchers.mu.nu - at which we opine about whatever we think, em, opinable? Go check it out if you wish.

In the meantime, the mere fact that Kirsten got in touch with me suggests that popping in for a future reunion (30th?) might be a very good thing.

Best regards to all -

- Rob

I should point out, in case anyone was wondering, that Rob told me he is the lawyer (and not the defendant) in the "legal discovery" that is keeping him away from reunion this year. Just in case anyone was picturing him with an electronic monitoring anklet...

Rob Galbreath?

Sarah Colvin said...

Rob Galbreath?
So he is still in the DC area?

Yes, I suppose the last name would have been a helpful hint.

Me no 99+ club member. Me not that bright.

Rob, I just read the reunion post on your blog ... What?! You didn't fit in? Sorry we'll miss you. I bet you're one cool cat now.
